"From what I understand, expenses (of the experiment) exceeded what (the partners) believed was worthwhile in regards to the number of riders," said Phil Brummel, administrator of the Allendale Department of Planning & Community Development. "They not did believe the expense was warranted."

In 2007, a $110,000 Service Development and New Technology Grant was awarded to Ottawa County by the Michigan Department of Transportation. The grant will allow the county to complete a needs assessment and feasibility study of public transit services in West Michigan.

"There's a movement afoot to be able to take a number of bus routes that will interconnect in Allendale and then be able to go downtown," Brummel said.

"I really believe garages add an amenity to a neighborhood by giving people a place to store their stuff," said Phil Brummel, administrator of planning and community development.
    ...
Brummel added that many people use garages for storage and park their cars outside.

After an 18-month study of the zoning ordinances, the Planning Commission voted to recommend the changes to the board, which approved them this week.

The average house built last year in the township was more than 1,600 square feet, compared to a national average of 2,300 square feet, Brummel said.
    ...
"We've discovered the mix of single-family and multifamily doesn't work," said Brummel, adding that 99 percent of the multifamily residents are students.

The amendments also require a special-use permit for commercial buildings over 20,000 square feet.Industrial zones already have that requirement.

Brummel said large buildings have more of an impact on traffic, neighborhoods and storm water than their smaller counterparts.
