"They lived it.Everyday, as well as they could, they practiced what they preached," Brummel said.

"I am very honored to be their son," Brummel said."Mom and Dad would do simple things, like pray before every meal, which is almost unheard of in most households today.I am also blessed to be raised on a farm, which can connect you so well with much of the agricultural imagery shared in the Gospel."

Brummel was the director of youth ministry at St. Anne Parish in Oswego, as well as the director of retreats for Christian Brothers LaSalle Manor Retreat House in Plano. In 1992, he followed God's call to serve the church with his own youth and family-based ministry, which is known today as Lighten Up!Ministries, LLC.

Brummel has produced an original Catechetical Production entitled Lighten Up! in which evangelization and entertainment collide. In his show, he transforms himself into a variety of colorful characters who help show how to connect faith into everyday life.

He has made more than 2,000 presentations across the country. The bishop of Colorado Springs called Brummel's ministry "a most refreshing approach to evangelization."

Brummel said his Marmion experience is an anchor of his faith.

"Even though you stray here and there throughout life, your core faith beliefs, which were reinforced so consistently at Marmion, can bring you back to the essence of what you truly believe," he said.

Brummel and his wife, Jennifer, have five children. They often travel together in their motor home serving communities nationwide through Lighten Up!Ministries.

As a family, the Brummels are in the process of launching a new branch of their ministry in which they will publish a variety of faith-based, family night-time readers for parents and young children.Their publishing company -- Rise and Shine Publications -- will publish family-friendly, easy reading books that affirm basic teachings of the Catholic faith.

    with Doug Brummel

Doug Brummel, a husband, father, and nationally-known Catholic Christian comedian, storyteller, musician and teacher, travels the Unites States entertaining and evangelizing people of all ages through his "Lighten Up!"family centered parish missions. He is coming to St. Michael on Monday and Tuesday, April 19 and 20.
    ...
Throughout the course of the mission presentations, Doug intertwines characterizations, storytelling, and catechesis with faith-sharing, music, and prayer.Families come together to laugh and learn about their faith all at the same time.

Doug has the ability to capture the attention of a multi-generational audience -- the young children and teenagers to the oldest parishioners -- and take them on a unique faith journey which challenges their heart and minds to be the Catholic Christians God call us to be.

Audiences marvel at the stamina and passion with which Doug presents "Lighten Up!".Many, many people have been heard saying, "This was the best church teaching I have ever had!", "I have never learned so much about my faith in two nights!", and "How does someone of Doug's age have such a wonderful talent and wisdom from our God?"

The youngest of seven, Doug was born and raised in a small town about fifty miles west of Chicago, Illinois.During his attendance in Catholic school, Doug remembers always feeling the call of the Lord in his life.

After receiving his bachelor's degree in Communications from Illinois State University, and his master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Illinois Benedictine College, Doug began more seriously discerning his "call".

This "call" has led him to serve the Lord as a parish youth minister, Director of a Christian Brothers' Retreat House, and since 1992, through his own ministry work. His ministry efforts have led him from parish and school youth retreats and Confirmation sessions to sharing his gifts through family-centered parish missions, keynote addresses at diocesan, regional, and national conferences. These conferences include the national Catholic Youth Conference, Knights of Columbus conventions, National Conference for Family Life Ministers, and many conferences for diocesan catechetical conferences for church leaders. He also serves as a representative for Christian Foundation for Children and Aging (CFCA), a Catholic mission sponsorship organization based in Kansas City, Kansas.

Doug believes God is calling him to bring families "together in Christ", both blood families and faith families.

Doug Brummel is a nationally-known Faith and Family Comedian and Storyteller. He travels the United States entertaining and evangelizing to people of all ages through his "Lighten Up!"Parish Family Missions/Renewals, Whole Community Theatre Events, and Keynote Presentations at regional and national conferences.

Doug's captivating style stirs the hearts, minds, and souls of all who attend his presentations. His multi-generational style emphasizes life-long conversion. The joy and richness of our faith heritage shines through the many stories which are shared by Doug's characters. They help us lighten up, laugh, and learn about our faith ... all at the same time!

    How did his ministry evolve?

Doug is the youngest of seven children born in Plano, a small rural town in Illinois.Raised in a fun, faith-filled, Catholic-Christian German farming family, Doug remembers "catching" his faith through his parent's example."They simply lived what they believed ... even if no one was watching!"

Doug credits his love of laughter and joy to years of trying to sleep above the roar of the laughter which would emerge from the many 'card clubs' his parents hosted in their home."To hear laughter, real belly-laughter, in the house is one of the greatest ways to teach children that life is worth living and that there is true joy in the Lord."

Growing up, Doug's family honored the Sabbath Day often times by taking a family drive on Sundays."Where are we going?," asked Doug. His parents' reply was, of course, "You will find out when we get there."Often the journey would end up at the homes of friends or family, where Doug would hear laughter, as well as witness the powerful medium of storytelling."I would hear such wisdom come from people of other generations older than myself.I have always valued those experiences so much."

In addition to sharing the laughter and wisdom of his parents, relatives, and his parents' friends, Doug absorbed the talents of such great comedic examples of Carol Burnett, Tim Conway, Lucy & Desi, Red Skelton, and Gilda Radner.
    ...
After earning his bachelors and masters degree, Doug followed God's call by serving as a youth minister for years, and then as the Director of Retreats for a Christian Brothers Retreat House.Doug began his own ministry in 1992.This ministry has evolved dramatically over the years into a unique multi-generational "family-based" ministry. The focus of his ministry, Lighten Up!Minsitries, LLC, is to bring faith and family together again. His presentations have been welcomed in almost every state in the nation, serving many hundreds of church communities and organizations throughout the United States.

Doug focuses much of his time and energy serving individual church communities by presenting a two-night "Lighten Up!"Series.Doug is also sought out by many organizations to present at diocesan, regional, and national events. His "Lighten Up!"
