(November 15, 2002) - Unemployment in the Rochester area eased to 5 percent in October -- the lowest in 12 months.
That is down from 5.5 percent in September but slightly higher than October 2001's rate of 4.9 percent for the six-county region, according to state Labor Department figures released Thursday.
The good news is of no consequence, though, to laid off workers who have been looking for jobs for months.

One of the long-term unemployed is Bob Brudecki. The 52-year-old Henrietta resident was laid off in November 2000 after 21 years working for Xerox Corp. Except for some temporary work, Brudecki has been unemployed since.
Each day, he applies to jobs in an array of fields and is willing to go anywhere to work. He now considers entry-level jobs even though he was a Xerox manager who once helped a $12 million project to convert a Webster warehouse into a new research and development site for 700 workers.
"It's hard for a lot of people to make that jump, but I try to keep a positive attitude," he said.
In the two years since he lost his job, Brudecki has drawn on his retirement savings to pay for his house.
"I am truly concerned with bridging the gap from 52 to retirement age," he said.
