MADISON , Any local gospel choir seeking a first alto can look to the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce here.

Katarina Brud, recently arrived from Sweden, is settling into her job as the newest office manager for the chamber by helping recruit new members. After work hours, though, Brud wants to pick up where she left off at home - singing in a gospel choir.

"I've sung in choirs everywhere I've lived - South Africa, Washington and Sweden," she said. "I'm looking for a gospel choir to join here."

Landing the job in Madison provided her with a musical bonus she wants to take advantage of, she said. "Mississippi is known for its great music history. It's known for its gospel."

Brud is the third Swedish college graduate to serve as office manager for a six-month period.

Brud, 24, who comes originally from Sweden's third largest island, is working on her master's thesis in international economics from Jonkoping International Business School. She expects to receive her degree in August. In addition to English, she speaks some German and understands Norwegian and Danish.

Brud worked at the Embassy of Sweden from January to August 2005 as a junior diplomat in the trade and economic affairs department. There she worked under th Swedish ambassador, who is now president of the U.N. General Assembly. The national headquarters of the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce had offices there, so Brud said she was familiar with the chamber's operations.

"I am really excited to join the chamber here because it's a new one," Brud said. "It's a great opportunity just starting out."

The Madison office, which serves the states of Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee and Louisiana, is the 19th chamber in the organization.

Since arriving here in mid-January, Brud has already been asset to the chamber and will continue to be, Vassallo said.
    ...
During her six-month stint here, Brud will travel to all five states, something she said she's looking forward to. "I've been traveling and living abroad a lot."

Brud lived in Oregon as a 16-year-old foreign exchange student. She has also studied in South Africa and traveled extensively. "Since I was 16, I've been in and out of Sweden."

She said she finds Mississippi different from Oregon or Washington.
    ...
By working here, Brud said, she is working for her country. "Why I'm doing this is because I love my country and I love to travel. I want to work with Sweden abroad."

Brud, who is staying with Vassallo and his wife, Rosie, will be here until mid-July.
