Band Director Tom Brucoli said the show was started more than 30 years ago by retired Champion band director Robert Paterniti.
...
‘‘This has become a big tradition in Champion, with many alumni coming back to see it," Brucoli said.
Brucoli said at one time, the glow lights were on the band members hats but because of the different heights of band members, it did not create the desired light effect. Then it was decided to have the glow lights placed on the members' feet.
‘‘It was a great idea," Brucoli said indicating Champion has become renowned because its band members march in the dark rather than stay in one place.
‘‘We do a little more for the show than many bands do," he said.
The blacklight show, always held on the second to last home game, often generates an boost at the gate for the athletic program, Brucoli said.
‘‘There are many people who come to that game not only to support the football team, but to be entertained by the show," he said.
Brucoli said the scheduling is set up so that in case of inclement weather, it could be held on the last home game.
Brucoli and Assistant Band Director Russell McQuaide have been practicing with the band for the show. -

Allowing adults to have a beer before a game is a selling point for many fans, said Tom Brucoli of suburban Warren, a YSU football season ticket holder. In past years, YSU's winning records and Division I-AA national championships were a natural draw, he said. Recently, attendance has dropped off. Without the bill, even fewer fans might come, said Brucoli, 48, a high school band director. "One of the carrots is everybody had a good time tailgating," Brucoli said.
