Cynthia Bruchman is a graduate student at Northern Illinois University. She received her Master of Arts degree from Illinois State University in May 2004. This article is an excerpt from her thesis. Bruchman is also a full-time English teacher at St. Bede Academy in Peru, Illinois. In addition, she instructs History classes at Illinois Valley Community College and English composition classes at Sauk Valley Community College. She is currently working on a second master's in English and hopes to begin research on her dissertation regarding Illinois child labor soon.
