"Nothing even remotely resembling any kind of weapon should accompany any kind of Halloween costume," said Shari Bruce, public relations director for Bethel Park School District. "When (parents) even question whether or not it may be considered a weapon, err on the side of caution and don't use it as part of a costume."
If a student shows up with such a costume, Bruce said, the offending item will be confiscated and the student may even be suspended. In 1998, Deer Lakes School District suspended a kindergarten pupil whose firefighter costume included a plastic ax.
Problematic costumes include those that many people find offensive, such as costumes alluding to the Confederate flag. A costume with excessive gore or a strong fright factor also might not be allowed, district officials said.
