(St. Catharines, Ont.) - October 27, 2000 - OEB International Vice President and General Manager John Armstrong is pleased to announce that Laura Bruce, a Senior Consultant at OEB, has been named "Volunteer of the Year" by Festivals and Events Niagara (FEN).
...
Laura was recognized at the FEN awards dinner last night for her leadership of the Niagara Symphony, of which she has been President since 1997. The award comes on the heels of her recognition earlier this week, when she was named a finalist in the Woman of the Year Awards.
...
A graduate of Brock University, Bruce joined OEB in 1995, and was promoted to Senior Consultant in 1998.
Bruce took the helm of the Niagara Symphony as its survival was threatened by bankruptcy. Since she became President in early 1997, the Niagara Symphony has posted three consecutive annual surpluses, signed a landmark agreement with Brock University to become Orchestra-in-Residence, and has been recognized widely in the arts community as an innovative organization. Bruce credits a team of talented directors, the Association's then-Executive Director, Laura Tilley, and the support of her OEB colleagues for the turn-around.
...
In addition to her work with the Niagara Symphony, Bruce also volunteers as a director with the Niagara Freewheelers Cycling Club, and the Mackenzie Heritage Printery. She is included in the Who's Who of Canadian Women, and was recognized in 1998 by the City of St. Catharines for her volunteer contributions.
...
"We will happily unburden you of your tax rebate," said Symphony President Laura Bruce. She noted that provincial funding of the Niagara Symphony has been cut by more than 50 per cent since 1996, taking an estimated $30,000 out of the charity's budget each year.
...
"We are standing by to process your donation," said Bruce.
...
"This is a major achievement, and we would not be here were it not for the support of many generous individuals in our community," said Laura Bruce, Symphony Board President. "Our move to Brock University has saved us thousands of dollars, and we are especially grateful to Brock University President David Atkinson and the University for this partnership," added Bruce.
...
Bruce also credited the Niagara Symphony Women's Committee, Symphony Executive Director Laura Tilley, and a dedicated volunteer board for ensuring the Symphony operated within its budget.
