Lance Bruce
Lance W. Bruce is a patient care technician (PCT) at Christiana Hospital. He is also president of district neighborhood planning council in Wilmington.
Bruce was recently visiting a city official in Wilmington's City/County building when a man in the office next door began having a seizure. As Bruce bent down to check his condition, the man suddenly stopped breathing. With no defibrillator, oxygen or other equipment on-site, Bruce quickly began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
While he could see the man's chest rising and falling with each breath, there was no pulse. Drawing on his 25 years as a respiratory technician and interaction with the Christiana Care Code Blue team, Bruce switched tactics and began cardiac chest compressions. After four compressions, the man began breathing, his color improved and he regained consciousness. Bruce stayed with the man until the paramedics arrived.
Bruce credits the health systems' employee CPR recertification program with helping to keep his skills sharp. -
