Wallen's compositions include a Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra, commissioned by the BBC, In Our Lifetime, choreographed by Christopher Bruce for London Contemporary Dance Theatre, and Horseplay, commissioned by The Royal Ballet. She was Composer in Residence at Dartington International Music Festival in 2002 and at Trinity College of Music in the winter semester 2004/2005.
In July 2003 Wallen's choral piece When the Wet Wind Sings for 40 voices was premièred by the Tallis Scholars at the Old Royal Naval College Chapel in Greenwich. Her opera Another America: Earth was first performed at the Linbury Studio Theatre at the Royal Opera House in November 2003 and has been repeated there in January 2005.
