   You always worry about the first day and the last day of school , said West High School Principal Bill Bruce. On the first day , you're worried about things going smoothly and on the last day you're worried about graduation.
   
   And everything else in between , Bruce said , chuckling.
   
   Some schools had to contend with those little details that can try the patience of everyone.
   
   At West High , one of the challenges was an influx of approximately 70 more students on the first day than had been expected.
   
   Somehow , there's always 50 to 100 kids at each school who show up that first day , Bruce said. We'll be dealing with those for the next couple of days..
   
   On the other end of the age spectrum , schools with kindergarten classes were experiencing the sound that often typifies the first day : crying.

   It's about courtesy , Bruce said. Back in the old days , people took off their hats whenever they walked into a room , but now you see people going into restaurants and movies with them..
   
   The school not only welcomed a new crop of freshman students , it also welcomed some freshman teachers as well.
   
   There were 20 teachers who are new to the campus , including some who have never taught before.
