Barrie Bruce was named one of the state,s top golf instructors by Golf Magazine.SUN/HOWARD MARTIN
A smile lights up Barrie Bruce's 63-year-old face.
...
But Bruce, the director of instruction at the Country Club of Billerica and the owner of Barrie Bruce Golf Schools, gets as much enjoyment talking about beginner golfers showing slight improvement.
...
While ball-striking is an important component to teaching, Bruce is just as adamant about teaching the rules of golf and stressing the need for sportsmanlike play.
,This game can be very discouraging and frustrating,, he said. ,We teach fundamentals here.We don't have any secrets or (believe in) shortcuts. You need to have a sense of humor.,
Recently, Bruce has helped develop young stars such as former Billerica High standout Nick Stevens, and Kevin, David and Brian Velardo of Wilmington High.

Bruce formerly taught math, for 20 years, at Marshall Middle School in Billerica.
Bruce, quick to thank the owners of the Country Club of Billerica, the Ferren family, for their support, was a terrific amateur player. He was named an All-American in 1962 and 1963 while a star at Tufts University, which he led to the 1961 and 1962 New England team championship. In 1962, he was the individual New England champion.
He then went on to capture the Mass. State Amateur title in 1967.
Today, after two hip replacement surgeries and one knee replacement surgery, he doesn't play much. But he hasn't lost it.Despite being very rusty, he shot a 79 at Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord last week.
