   Towering above his colleagues in the Berkeley Symphony cello section, Matt Brubeck is hard to miss.But as was apparent at the BSO's October 1998 concert,when he stepped on stage for a solo jazz rendition of "Happy Birthday" for longtime Berkeley Symphony patron Peggy Graupner,Matt is distinguished by much more than his 6-foot 7-inch frame.Though classically trained at Yale, he is at ease in a wide range of musical styles, and in addition to cello he plays keyboards and bass and is active as a composer and arranger.
   
   Matt is currently a member of Sheryl Crow's band and has performed with Tom Waits, Sarah McLachlan and the Indigo Girls.As a member of Oranj Symphonette, he has recorded two CD's on the Rykodisc label and has performed at numerous jazz festivals, including Montreal, Monterey and New York.When not working with any of the above, Matt can often be found playing with local jazz and avant-garde musicians/composers such as John Schott, Ben Goldberg and Beth Custer.
   
   Ultimately, it is Matt's interest in classical music that is the most surprising thing in his musical résumé."Growing up in a house where my father [jazz legend Dave Brubeck] and older brothers all played jazz," observes Matt, "perhaps pursuing classical music was an unconscious act of rebellion."

   Matt Brubeck has taken his cello improvisation skills into a wide range of musical territories in the last ten years.In the jazz realm, he founded Oranj Symphonette, which recorded two CD's and played the New York, Montreal, and Monterey Jazz festivals and received first place in Downbeat Magazine's 1997 critics poll for "Talent Deserving Wider Recognition."Matt has also recorded three jazz CD's with guitarist David Widelock.
