   In 1983, Darius Brubeck introduced the first Jazz Studies degree in Africa and he remains a Director of the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa where he spends 3 months each year.

   He led university groups at five IAJE conferences, most recently in 2005, and directed South Africa's National Youth Jazz Band at Holland's North Sea Jazz Festival in 2004.Brubeck created music for the United Nations "World Conference Against Racism" and performed for heads of state at the founding conference of the African Union.Wynton Marsalis and The Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra premiered a commissioned composition by Brubeck and Zim Ngqawana in 2004.The London Symphony Orchestra has also performed his compositions and arrangements, and in 2005, the Rockefeller Foundation awarded him a residency at the Bellagio Study and Conference Center in Italy.He is a Sheer Sound recording artist.
