Making the leap from corporate management to a world of four-legged friends is a welcome adjustment for animal lover Kim Brubaker.
Last week, Brubaker was named interim executive director at the Humane Society of South Central Michigan, the area's largest nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter, located at 2500 Watkins Road.

Brubaker, who spent her career in a variety of executive positions in human resources and benefits for Felpausch Co.Inc., began Wednesday and said she's already loving it.
"It's an incredibly warm and friendly environment, both the animals and the people," the Battle Creek resident said."It's obvious the amount of passion people here have for the animals."
Brubaker - who also has worked for local nonprofit groups, including the Battle Creek Community Foundation, and still heads the Felpausch Foundation - will work part time as interim director until the humane society board makes a decision on the permanent position.

"It's like the show 'Antique Roadshow,' where people can bring an old heirloom and we have a professional appraiser help judge it's value," Brubaker said."And of course, all the money goes to the shelter."
Wednesday morning, Brubaker spent time getting to know the staff - and greeting her animal charges, including Magic, a blind golden-colored mutt, who Brubaker said already has stolen her heart.
"We had to put our 17-year-old dog, Shelby, to sleep recently and we haven't gotten a new dog yet," she said.
