2. The Motivation Behind the Success

It's the story of Kevin Brubaker, founder and owner of the Charlotte Allstars and CHEERSPORT. And although the story might be long, it'll only take you a short time to realize the motivation behind his success.
The Charlotte Allstars began in 1990 with 18 girls on one highly energetic team. Now, there are 300 participants on 11 all-star squads with numerous titles, awards and trophies. Yes, it's phenomenal growth by any standards, but that almost seems like the easy part, when it is their accomplishments that make them stand out and apart from other programs. "Back in the 90's we were one of a few companies that won in both the UCA All-Star and NCA All-Star Nationals. That was quite a feat ten years ago," Brubaker explains.
CHEERSPORT developed almost as an afterthought for Brubaker. From 1993-1995 he served as the president of the North Carolina Allstars Coaches Association. It was during this time that different clubs would host a competition every year similar to a state championship. When it came around to Brubaker's turn to host the event, he incorporated the spring floor (this was the first spring floor used in a cheerleading competition) and everyone thought it was a huge success. Then in 1996 he was asked to host another one and as he watched the various teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia and Tennessee he thought to himself, "Wow, I need to put on a national championship." After giving it more thought and selecting Atlanta as the host city, CHEERSPORT was born.
"I started CHEERSPORT, like every gym in the country, to make a little extra money to help pay my staff at Charlotte Allstars. I didn't want them to have to teach 50,000 classes every day and to do every tumbling class. I wanted them to focus on the team, tumbling and trying to make the Charlotte Allstars better," Brubaker said.
At the first CHEERSPORT Nationals, Brubaker found himself with 32 teams. Now, approaching their tenth year anniversary, the event has grown to almost 19,000 participants from 36 states on over 800 teams. With numbers like that, it's easy to see why CHEERSPORT Nationals has been the largest single cheerleading event for the last four years. Brubaker adds, "It's kind of funny, by starting CHEERSPORT, I just wanted to make a little extra revenue to pay our salaries and at the time I didn't know it was going to become the largest cheerleading and dance competition in the world.
...
Brubaker goes on to say, "We offer a lot of variety to our staff and coaches.
...
Does Brubaker have any advice to share with other coaches? You bet he does. He advises, "If you are not in it to build relationships and to build up the kids, then you're probably not in it for the right reasons.
...
As for advice to gym owners, Brubaker said, "You can't substitute good people.
...
From a humble beginning as a high school gymnast and an "average college cheerleader," Brubaker has accomplished much and has carved out a legacy in the cheerleading world. Along the way he has maintained his faith and is not afraid to show it-it's truly that which motivates him. -

Kevin Brubaker, president of Cheersport, which draws almost 18,000 cheerleaders and dancers from 36 states to its national competition every year, said Premier already has huge name recognition in the industry.
"As far as the coaches, the professionalism of the organization, they are by far one of the best in the country. It is a phenomenal organization," Brubaker said.
