   The American Red Cross of Greater Chicago presented awards to Grainger and Hewitt Associates for their corporate partnership, Captain David Brozman of the Joliet Fire Department for the department's role in expansion of the Team Firestopper program, and Steve Robinson and WFMT for leadership in organizing the Chicago Media Drive for Tsunami Relief in January.

   Fire Captain Dave Brozman is the SALF representative in Joliet. He was instrumental in coordinating the SALF programs with the Joliet Fire Department's F.A.S.T. (Fire Awareness Safety Team) program. This is the first time that two such valuable educational programs have been cooperatively introduced into a school training program.
   
   Captain Brozman has been so successful in getting the SALF programs into the Joliet school system that the Plainfield school districts are anxious to have the SALF programs taught to their students.
   
   The SALF and F.A.S.T. programs are being taught to every fourth grade student in the Joliet schools during the last part of the 2004-05 school year.

   The new Freddie is a three-foot-by-three-foot robotic remote control fire truck with moving eyes and a mouth , said Capt. Dave Brozman , Joliet Fire department public education officer. He recently joined the fire department staff and the original Freddie.
   
   It is all remote control , Brozman said of the robo-fire truck. It has lights , sirens , a face that can wink and it can squirt water at the kids. It is a lot of fun..
   
   Brozman , who usually is the one at Freddie's controls , said the robot has a voice modulator that can alter the operator's speech.
   
   The voice modulator turns my voice to this shrill and high cartoony voice , he said.
   
   Earlier this month , the Joliet City Council approved the purchase of a second Freddie chassis for $5 , 500 from Utah-based Robotronics. The second chassis was purchased because the first Freddie is in high demand at area schools. And , having a backup in case of mechanical problems is also a plus , Brozman said.

   Because the manufacturer is so far away , company representatives had to send Brozman a new circuit board. Once he received it , company technicians guided him in the electronics installation via telephone , Brozman said.
   
   It was really funny to see all of these mechanics , who work on the fire trucks , standing over this little robot trying to help me , he said.
   
   Besides serving as a backup , the second Freddie chassis can be equipped with an Andy the Ambulance body , Brozman said.
   
   Andy is pretty similar to Freddie with the eyes and mouth except he doesn't squirt water , he said.
   
   Freddie's entire presentation lasts about an hour and includes stop , drop and roll. Some kids get to dress in child-sized fire gear is also a part of the program , he said.
   
   We want to make sure the kids are not afraid of firefighters in case of emergency , Brozman said.
