New Charlotte Players chief Bernard Broyles is an old hand at stagecraft. posted 11/10/01

    ...
CHARLOTTE COUNTY -- Bernard Broyles never forgot his first stage role in high school as an aging Indian chief in Red Elk Speaks.. Now he's landed a role as the new chief of Charlotte Players Inc..

But don't expect him to take over any directing jobs.

I'm happy to stand behind the artistic director and be supportive , Broyles said. My job is to see that a show is smoothly produced and to fill in wherever I'm needed..

The 40-year-old native of St. Louis will bring not only extensive theater experience , but business and computer skills to the executive director's job of overseeing the 41-year-old nonprofit community theater group. He replaces Judy Malbuisson , who is now executive director for the Charlotte County Arts & Humanities Council.

A North Port resident since August 2000 , Broyles moved here from New Jersey , where he lived after serving six years in the Army. Besides his regular duties as an administrative specialist , he helped manage and performed in USO shows.

I really loved putting those shows together , Broyles said. It's the art of theater that made me go out for this job. With my business training as well as my performing experience , I think this job is a perfect fit. I can put all my experience to work and serve the community , too..

    ...
The job is unstructured , but involves a lot of detail work , and the unexpected always happens in theater , but Bernie knows the ropes..

Broyles got much of his experience in New Jersey after his Army service.

After doing the USO shows , my best buddy from Jersey and I decided that's what we wanted to do , Broyles said.

While I was in New Jersey , I trained with Martin Freidberg at the Improvisational Comedy School. We'd organize shows and put them on at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank..

Broyles performed a number of roles on stages in New Jersey and New York and was featured in the wedding scene in the Malcolm Lee film The Best Man , which was released in November 1999.

Broyles plays numerous musical instruments and is an accomplished vocalist who most recently was featured in a Fort Myers production of Star Search 2001..

He is also musical director for his church , North Port Community Church of God in Christ.

One of his goals for Charlotte Players is to spot and mentor talent.

I still have a lot of contacts in the business , and if I can help a new talent out I will , he said. I have attended a number of shows here , and there is a lot of talent..

Bernard Broyles , 40 , put together USO shows during a stint in the Army.
