...
Winston-Salem, NC - July 22, 2003 - Winston-Salem businessman Ed Broyhill, the son of former Congressman and U. S. Senator Jim Broyhill, announced today he has filed with the Federal Election Commission as a candidate for Congress from North Carolina's Fifth District.
The filing allows Broyhill to organize a political committee to accept contributions and begin to assemble a campaign staff.
Broyhill is seeking the seat held by Congressman Richard Burr, who is retiring from the House of Representatives to run for the U. S. Senate.
"With unemployment at a 10-year high in many areas, I intend to make job creation the focal point of this campaign," Broyhill said. He said he would also be discussing other serious issues such as national security, Social Security, Medicare and education.
Broyhill also announced that L. Glenn Orr, Jr. of Winston-Salem, former Chairman and CEO of Southern National Corporation, will serve as his campaign treasurer. After completing the merger of equals between Southern National Corporation and BB&T, he founded The Orr Group, a prominent investment banking company.
Broyhill is managing director with the Broyhill Group, an investment banking company based in Winston-Salem. His grandfather and namesake, the late J. E. Broyhill, founded Broyhill Furniture Industries, served as Republican National Committeeman from North Carolina for three decades, and is considered a founding father of the Republican Party in the State. His father, Honorable James T. Broyhill, represented North Carolina's 10th Congressional District, served in the U. S. Senate, as Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Commerce, and as Chairman of North Carolina's Economic Development Board, compiling 30 years of distinguished public service.

Broyhill heads fundraising for Republican Senate Committee
Wednesday, April 05, 2006
Raleigh Republican Senate Leader Phil Berger announced today that Winston-Salem businessman and civic leader Ed Broyhill has agreed to chair the North Carolina Republican Senate Committee (NCRSC) fundraising efforts for the 2006 election.
The NCRSC is responsible for raising money statewide to assist Republican Senate candidates. The group's goal is to raise $1 million to aid Republican efforts to gain the 5 seats needed for Republican control of the State Senate.
"Ed Broyhill has a proven fundraising track record and valuable experience with business, political, and charitable organizations," said Republican Senate Leader Phil Berger. "It will take substantial financial resources to overcome the Democrats fundraising advantage, and Ed Broyhill is the right person to lead this effort. We're excited that with Ed's help we will reach our fundraising goals."
Ed Broyhill described the 2006 election as "critical" to continuing Republican gains in the North Carolina General Assembly. "With no statewide election for Governor, Senate, or President, there will be an intense focus on legislative races," said Broyhill. "With that in mind and with the legal and ethical problems facing Democrats, the time is right to support Republican state senate candidates. As Chairman of the NCRS fundraising committee, I am confident we can take control of the Senate."
