Lina Broydo
...
Lina Broydo, public relations director at The Fairmont San Jose, has become synonymous with the city of San Jose. She knows everybody and everything.
...
Ms. Broydo is surprised and delighted by the recognition. She is also a little shy about it and a little embarrassed. "My job is to promote everybody else. It's hard for me to talk about myself. I grew up in Russia where you should not talk about yourself," she says.
At the same time, she likes the concept of honoring living people.
"I like this philosophy that people should be celebrated when they do a good job, not when they die," Ms. Broydo says.
Before coming to the Fairmont 18 years ago, she worked in the Public Affairs Department at a local TV station and later started her own company, Executive Sports, Inc., which promoted special events and charity fundraisers with famous athletes.
"Here, I am a liaison to the community, representing the hotel to community events and dealing with the media," she says.
And she loves her job.
"Every day you learn something," she says.
...
I wish there were 56 hours in a day," Ms. Broydo says.
As the hotel's public face, she has hosted many of the world's most famous and powerful people. "A lot of history is created here," Ms. Broydo says.
Even though she interacts with celebrities and power brokers, she has one basic approach to making all of the guests feel equally welcome. "I provide high touch in the land of high tech. Even in this high tech world, it's nice to have this warm welcome," Ms. Broydo says.
In addition to fulfilling her duties at the Fairmont, Ms. Broydo serves on the boards of the American Cancer Society and the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame (BASHOF). Each year, BASHOF inducts famous athletes who were active in local sports at some point in their careers. The organization also raises money for children's sports activities and this year donated $2.5 million, according to Ms. Broydo.
This year, she also serves on the planning commission for the YWCA of Silicon Valley's Tribute to Women in Industry Award, which she won last year. Candidates for the award are nominated by the company they work for. "They are amazing women," Ms. Broydo says. This year's tribute is especially meaningful because it will be held on May 17, the 100th anniversary of the local chapter.
And the event will be held (where else?) at The Fairmont.
"I do have a passion for this job and this city," Ms. Broydo says. "The people are so wonderful."
She adds that working at the hotel is more than providing a place for people to sleep. "It's a partnership with the community, with the leaders of the community, the teachers, the business people and the civic leaders. It's incredibly gratifying," Ms. Broydo says. -
