   "These costs are spread around the trading systems and passed on to investors and other players in the market," says Chris Broyden, a partner in Accenture's Capital Markets Practice. "For a number of years, people have been looking at how they can reduce these friction costs rising from bad data and are looking to resolve some of the root causes."
   
   There are three main types of reference data: reference data for instruments such as securities and the underlying rates for those securities; reference data for trade counterparties and thirdly, static reference data trading holidays and tax regimes.
   
   The first two types of reference data are the most complex and pose the greatest challenge to the financial services industry. Broyden explains: "Securities data are used by all market participants and should therefore be consistent across the industry.
