That is the philosophy that AMF Westchester's new manager, Bob Brownstein, plans to follow.
Brownstein became the Center's manager Feb. 6, replacing Mike Yorba.
...
Brownstein was hired by AMF and comes from the Santa Monica area, where he was the assistant manager of Bay Shore Lanes since the fall of '96.
He came to manage Westchester on a temporary basis and said he liked the area and people so much that he accepted an offer as permanent manager.
Brownstein, born and raised in Culver City, attended UCLA and earned a BA Degree in political science in 1973, and a law degree at Northrop School of Law in '78. He practiced law from 1979-90. In 1992, he was employed by Active West, which was acquired by AMF in '98.
At Active West he held a variety of jobs, working with desk relations and bowler development. He also wasan assistant manager and district marketing manager for AMF Los Angeles North district, which includes Westchester and Southwest Lanes.
As far as his bowling career, he has one 300 game.
He started bowling as a junior and said he got into bowling because his mother was a bowler. He then continued with bowling when he attended UC Davis, taking bowling for his mandatory PE class. His then bowled in a civic league in Culver City.
He married his wife, Patty, 28 years ago, and they started a family.
The Brownsteins have a daughter, Jacquie, and son, John. Bob has also coached juniors in bowling.
He said there are many things that need to be better at Westchester and has been putting in countless hours the past several weeks trying to make improvements.
He's working on changing the seating in several of the settee areas of the lanes to make more seats available for league bowlers.
Brownstein said he believes a manager of a center is a "caregiver." People come down to bowl with their own set of problems and "we have to do something to make them feel better."
He said he wants his employees to be service-oriented because "it's nice to be nice."
Brownstein said that one of the things that AMF is serious about doing to promote the sport is to "recruit open bowlers by going lane to lane to get them into league bowling."
Brownstein said he is interested in catering to serious league bowlers and wants to put down a lane condition that they are looking for. He said he is willing to meet bowlers on Saturdays around 7a.m. at Westchester to experiment with a new oil pattern.
Also on Brownstein's staff are center administrator Sonia Brunson and bowler development coordinator Jeff Ryder, who has moved over from AMF Southwest. -
