Through his work with the ADL, Berny Brownstein, CEO and founder of The Brownstein Group, has been involved with the "No Place for Hate" campaign for the past two years. This year, however, he wanted to bring a fresh, new approach to the campaign's development by energizing it with some younger points-of-view. As an active alumnus of The University of the Arts, Brownstein chose the institution and its students as his forum for the contest.

In partnership with the ADL, Brownstein presented the opportunity to the sophomore illustration class, made up of about 40 students, and, in concert with their instructors, worked with them on the project throughout the semester. The students were pushed to think about the idea of prejudice and pull from their own experiences to find inspiration for their creative concept.

"It's enlightening to realize how aware young people are of the problems that exist today," said Brownstein. "Each student brought something to the table that was unique or thought-provoking, so it was quite an insightful process for me as well. It was tough to decide the winner of the contest having been shown so much talent, but the Anti-Defamation League and I are proud of the selected piece since we feel it truly delivers the message that the 'No Place for Hate' campaign is centered around."

Brownstein and representatives of the ADL chose Oleg Djimbinov's work as the winner. His poster displays a group of people standing with boxes over their heads showing different labels such as "White," "Black," "Gay" and "Jew." The tagline reads "Labels are for packages, not people."

As an Asian native of Russia now living in Philadelphia, Djimbinov had, himself, felt the effects of prejudice, so the contest was a very personal experience for him. Through this campaign, Djimbinov hopes that his vision will have a personal impact on others as well.

Brownstein recognized Djimbinov and his winning work with a cash prize at the ADL's board meeting and hopes to continue the annual contest at The University of the Arts for years to come.
