Brownrigg Agriculture principal David Brownrigg said his company would move cattle from its herds near Wairoa if Agriquality decided the cattle should be moved.

" We are reliant on good advice when it comes to disease management," he said.

"We have voluntarily gone much further than the minimum requirements prior to moving stock. But Agriquality's pre-movement test was clearly not foolproof," he said.

"It looks as though our risk management process failed and I am not happy with that".

Mr Brownrigg said the company had taken too much comfort from pre-movement testing.

"I'm reviewing correspondence from Agriquality about those cattle prior to being purchased," he said. "We should have never bought those cattle.

Mr Brownrigg said the cattle he had bought from Taumarunui had had two clear blood tests, and he rejected the suggestion that the Wairoa animals were a "ticking time bomb".

"We have voluntarily gone much further than the minimum requirements prior to moving stock. But Agriquality's pre-movement test was clearly not foolproof," he said. "From the picture that is emerging it looks as though our risk management process failed and I am not happy with that. "With the benefit of hindsight we have been taking too much comfort from pre-movement testing. "I'm reviewing correspondence from Agriquality about those cattle prior to being purchased. We should never have bought those cattle. Mr Brownrigg said the cattle he had bought from Taumarunui were C2 status and incorporated into a C10 herd. It was not possible to know whether the original infection had broken down in one of the Taumarunui cattle beasts or another in the herd as the TB could have been passed to an original in the herd. The cattle have had two clear blood tests and Mr Brownrigg said he understood that there was no chance of them being "a ticking time bomb" as quoted by Federated Farmers Gisborne-Wairoa president Jean Martin.

House repairer says he is frustrated by vandals A vacant burned-out house in the Fitzgerald block in Kaiti, an area where neighbours have complained about the neglect some people are showing the area. A man trying to repair the house says vandalism is stopping him. A man who is trying to carry out repair work on a partly-burned vacant house in the Fitzgerald block says he cannot believe the cheek of people who are upset about the state of their neighbourhood. He had been trying to do work for absentee owners for months but his efforts were continually undone in attacks by locals, he said. In the most recent attack, people would have had to use crowbars to smash their way in through barricades put over doors and windows and use sledgehammers to smash the walls inside. "I notified police but, as usual, no one heard anything, no one saw anything and no-one did anything," he said. "I did a lot of work on that house but they even stole my scaffolding while my back was turned for a minute," he said. "Anyone who tries to do anything with the house is continually harassed by gangs and the citizens do nothing. They are as big a coward as anyone and for anyone to complain really riles me." The house causing offence would remain barricaded up for a very long time, he said. "How can anyone tidy up anything around there? You feel intimidated just to go up there. . . how can anyone do any work?" If people were annoyed about the state of their surroundings they should have the guts to report vandalism to the police, rather than complaining about it, he said.

Brownrigg Agriculture principal David Brownrigg spoke briefly at the meeting that was held to discuss the recent outbreak of TB near Wairoa in four cattle from herds owned by his company. Some claimed the disease had been brought into Wairoa in cattle moved by the large Hawke's-Bay based farming company. Mr Brownrigg said they were working with Agriquality and were focused on the containment and eradication of the disease.
