Eleanor Brownridge - Glass Artist Dining and The Arts
...
Eleanor Brownridge
She has reinvented herself as a glass artist
Like many people these days, Eleanor Brownridge has reinvented herself. About 15 years ago she and her husband wanted something different for a window in their new home and also wanted to integrate into their new community so they attended stained glass classes. Eleanor found herself fascinated.
She had a thriving public relations business in Mississauga, but her stained glass pieces were attracting attention, and this was only a hobby! Five years ago, she decided it was time to make the switch and try it full time as a glass artist.
While she was working in stained glass, she learned about fusion glass and, wanting to add a third dimension to her pieces, furthered her studies in the U.S. Now much of her work is fusion glass. This is a complicated and slow process by which the pieces of glass are cut and laid flat in the kiln where they are fused together under extreme heat. Once the first fusing has taken place she works on the shape she wishes - a bowl perhaps, or a plate, even a sink. She re-fires and works with the piece for up to five days for larger pieces, 28 hours for smaller ones.
Eleanor finds there is a huge demand for larger pieces and is in the process of purchasing a third kiln, bathtub size. It will go in her new studio south of Nottawa where she moved this fall and continues to work in both methods of glass art.
Her web site is filled with images of pieces she has created. They show her wonderful sense of colour and design and the great fun she experiences while working. She sells wholesale across the country, at studio tours and shows such as the One Of A Kind Show in Toronto. Her studio is open by appointment or chance.
