    Cliff Brownmiller, an airplane maintenance worker who retired from United Parcel Service and now owns the UPS store on East Broadway, has been volunteering for Repair Affair for 11 years.

    He has fixed floors, windows and roofs and built wheelchair ramps.

    Brownmiller said that in addition to helping homeowners, the experience is good for companies.

    "You get all layers of employers from upper management to middle management all working shoulder to shoulder equally," he said.

    "And we begin to find there's a lot of gifts and talents that we all have."

    Brownmiller said the people aided by Repair Affair do not have the income for expensive repairs.Helping them, he said, is gratifying.

    "Their smiles and their thanks are all the things we need to keep us going," he said.
