"Osco Pharmacy is a pivotal component of the Kankakee community," said Jill Brownley, pharmacy communications manager for Supervalu, corporate owner of Jewel.
"Many pharmacy patients rely on the care and customer service our pharmacy team provides. We are committed to meeting the health care needs of our pharmacy customers," she added.
Last summer, Osco closed its store, which was next to the Jewel on South Washington Avenue. That Osco store had been bought by CVS/Pharmacy, which vacated the building and transferred all operations, including the pharmacy, to the CVS store on West Court Street.
Supervalu still had Osco stores that were in the same building as Jewel, such as the operation in Bourbonnais.
By placing the Osco Pharmacy in the Kankakee Jewel, Supervalu sees the Kankakee pharmacy market as continuing to grow, Brownley said.
"Customers are looking for convenience, as well as customer service from their pharmacy," she added.
Along with receiving prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications, visitors to the Osco Pharmacy at Jewel can receive allergy screening, health screening tests and immunization services.
Also, Supervalu will expand its health and beauty care departments at the Kankakee store.
Three pharmacists, with more than 42 years of combined service, will return to Osco, said Brownley.
While the concept of a Jewel having an Osco Pharmacy and nothing else from Osco is unique in the local market, the format has been used in the past and in different markets, Brownley said.
