   Mary Browning – Head Women's Openweight Coach,

   Mary has been Wisco's head coach since 1997 and has been with the program since 1993. Her varsity crew won the all-points trophy at the IRA Championships in 1997 and 1998. Wisco's varsity eight finished tenth at the 2000 Eastern Women's Sprints. Mary was a coxswain at UMass during her collegiate career.
   
   USRowing: What is the top tool you use to identify top prospects?
   
   Coach Browning: Although we use many sources to identify potential prospects, we rely heavily on the junior national team testing results and the squad lists for the junior selection and development camps.
   
   USRowing: What do you look at first: An athlete's on-the-water exploits or their accomplishments in the classroom?

   Mary Browning is the past Head Coach at the University of Wisconsin. Mary began her rowing career at the University of Massachusetts and went on to lead the Badgers for many years, She carried on and lead a successful campaign of Big Ten rowing in Madison. She recently had her second child and is anxious to coach the champions of tomorrow, today.

   Madison - Mary Browning has done everything but take out personal ads in the Daily Cardinal to pump up interest in her sport.

   Rowing is billed as the oldest sport at the University of Wisconsin with records of competitions dating to 1874, but it is being rediscovered in Madison and around the country for a very good reason.

   But most of the college coaches, including Browning, have figured out there is nowhere near enough junior talent to supply the burgeoning need for quality talent.

   "We teach them everything," said Browning, a diminutive lady who got into the sport as a coxswain for the University of Massachusetts squad.

   "We get along real well with the men," Browning said of the Wisconsin men's rowing team, which shares the Lake Mendota boathouse with her women's team.

   Browning, her staff and her players recruit the Madison campus hard for potential rowers and the lure of scholarships is a fabulous selling point.
   
   "What we do is we beat the bushes," Browning said. "We do some recruiting at the national level, but there are no rowing programs in Wisconsin and only a few club programs for us to pull from.
   
   "So we hit the streets. There are 10,000 new freshmen that come here every year and most of them have seen us in action."
   
   Browning and her crew attend every new student event, sizing up every woman as a potential addition to their program.
   
   "What we are looking for is tall women with athletic builds," Browning said.

   "This place is so big it's a fertile ground for finding recruits," Browning said.
