The Business and Organizational Management Program, believed to be the only undergrad program of its type in the U.S., seeks to teach effective and profitable business management "through the lens of social responsibility," said Eileen Brownell, associate professor at Sage, director of the new program and a member of the YWCA's Board of Directors. The YW will provide internship opportunities for undergrads to get on-the-job business and management experience in a not-for-profit setting.
"We want to give students a foundation built on ethical thinking, so that when they are in the business world and important decisions need to be made, they have experience to draw from in making socially responsible choices," said Ms. Brownell.

With Board Member Eileen Brownell
An associate professor at Russell Sage College and program director of the newly-launched Business and Organizational Management Program, Eileen Brownell has her hands full. In addition, she is director of the Business Administration Program and director of the college's Allies Center for the Study of Social Responsibility.
Nevertheless, she finds the time to be a member of the YW's board, and to serve on our Finance Committee, where she puts her business background to good use.
Pof. Brownell is a co-coordinator of the Artists for Social Justice Concert, an annual event that gives a forum to artists of diverse mediums who deal with social justice issues. The concert follows the "Take Back the Night Rally," set this year for Thursday, Octobery 24, in downtown Troy.
"The YW attracts people with positive attitudes and high energy levels," said Prof. Brownell. "It sends a message to the community that we are a group of 'do-ers', that we believe there is social justice progress to be made and that we are prepared to do the work. I've always been a strong supporter of helping women to feel empowered, so the YW is a natural draw for me."
Connecting several years ago with the YW trough mutual friends, including former board member Sandra Gull and fellow Sage Professor Chrys Ingraham, Prof. Brownell has coordinated internships at the YW for students in her Women Changing the World class. The students have contributed to the development of My Sister's Closet, The Sally Catlin Resource Center and other programs.
"The YWCA provides a safe, welcoming place in the community where women can find opportunities and enyou the support of others," said Prof. Brownell. -

Professors Eileen Brownell and Chrys Ingraham say they envisioned a degree program holding together a series of courses that would begin redefining corporate leadership. The program aims to add what traditional business degree programs have left out, preparing students to enter either the for-profit or the non-profit world, says Ingraham, associate professor of sociology.
"Living in a world out of balance -- 9/11, global warming, racism, sweatshops, Enron -- it is clear we've lost perspective about what is important," says Ingraham. "Without balance, we do not all have the same opportunities. We wanted to create a program that invites students to imagine a world that balances social responsibility with economic viability and to take the leadership in that world." -

"As we did our research to design this program, we came across Anita Roddick and read all of her books," says Brownell, associate professor of business and organization management at Russell Sage College.
