In 1890, Dr. Thomas Browne, the honorable secretary of the Great Yarmouth Golf Club in England, was playing against Major Wellman. The match was played against the ground score, the name given to the scratch value of each hole. The system of playing against the ground score was new to the Major. As the match went on, Dr. Browne just couldn't miss a shot. All the while this popular song was playing in the Major's mind. The Major thus declared his nearly invincible opponent as a regular Bogey-Man. This name caught on at Great Yarmouth, and today it still maintains it's popularity. -
