"Many people say that online commerce is the wave of the future," said iWTC executive director Kenneth Browne, "but it is undoubtedly clear that its time has arrived." He pointed to a recent study by Nielsen Media Research that shows that 2.5 million adults have already purchased goods or services on the Internet's World Wide Web. The study described Internet users as affluent and highly educated with 25 percent having annual household incomes of $80,000 or higher and 64 percent with at least four years of college.

According to Mr. Browne the site was created to bring online advertising, communication and transaction processing services to companies new to the Internet as well as to those with established homepages. "There was a need for a secure online environment in which companies could attract and conduct business," he said. "That's why we built a major web site patterned after international business centers." He added that iWTC provides companies all necessary services to get started including design of online advertising and communications, support of order entry and electronic data interchange (EDI) and database integration.

Companies lease space in the iWTC by purchasing various-sized units of online pages. These range from inexpensive one-page business cards to 60-page areas capable of housing multimedia annual reports, executive overviews and interactive advertising. iWTC installations also enable clients to process orders and transactions, maintain catalogs and provide customer support. "It's important for companies to maintain a presence on the Internet," Mr. Browne said. "The iWTC offers online visibility for as little as $7.50 a month per page." Businesses with an established presence on the World Wide Web may choose a welcome page that offers visitors a description of its products and services and an opportunity to connect directly to its homepage via an automatic process called hyperlinking.

Visitors to the Internet World Trade Center enter through its lobby where a newsstand offers USA Today, Time Magazine, the Financial Times and many other publications. A tenant directory can be searched by company name or by product or service. Companies are grouped by industry.
