    EDWARD BROWNE

He performed very well in several sports but Edward Browne was elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of the outstanding career he enjoyed as a player and builder within basketball.

His basketball career exceeded 30 years and involved playing, coaching and administrating the sport he loved all his life. There is nobody who was more involved in local and provincial basketball than Edward Browne.

His playing career was filled with success, for the teams on which he played and for him individually. A perennial all-star, he stood out for many teams, mostly St. Bon's.

As a coach he produced some of the finest players and teams the province has seen, especially during his 16 years at Memorial University and five years at the Sir Wilfred Grenfell College.

His expertise was respected so much that he acted as manager of Canadian senior men's teams in international competition. This was in addition to his service in a variety of executive positions and even some officiating.

While Edward Browne is best remembered for his great basketball career, he worked well and hard for a wide range of community organizations, especially athletic, during his teaching period. Life within the province is better because of Edward Browne.

A top level baseball player, he enjoyed considerable success in rowing, hockey, soccer and track and field. Son of Canadian Cabinet Minister Honourable William Browne, he was interested in many aspects of life, including politics.

Edward Browne, who died of cancer in 1983, had his great basketball career as the main reason for his induction into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame November 3, 1984.
