These and many other adornments to the City's public spaces are made possible through the generous legacy of Edward Ingersoll Browne, a Boston trust attorney, who upon his death directed that one third of his estate be used by the City of Boston to create a special fund for the improvement of public spaces.
From that bequest, a public charitable trust was created. Its first project was authorized in 1978, and since that time the fund has authorized more than $15.0 million for 145 projects throughout the City of Boston. A commitment to the diverse neighborhoods of Boston is evidenced by the distribution of the monies, with over 80% of funds allocated for project in the Boston's many neighborhoods.
The man behind the Fund, Edward Ingersoll Browne was born in Boston 1833, and educated at Boston Latin School and Harvard College. Committed to service and personal improvement, he believed it was his private duty to help others make their lives better as well. During his lifetime, Browne gave generously to public institutions including orphanages, hospitals and schools. However, it is his contribution to Boston's public spaces that is the most tangible legacy of his generosity. -
