Carole Brown, executive director of Rochesterfest, said the weather was also keeping the Rochesterfest turnout down at noon Tuesday.

"Hopefully, the rain will cool it off," she said.
    ...
"We have plenty of pop and water and cool things to eat and drink," Brown said.

"It's the annual pig-out," jokes Carole Brown, executive director of Rochesterfest. "Everyone seems to have their favorite, from the huge turkey legs to the baklava. And who could miss the cheese curds?"

All the other summer standards are available, like mini donuts, corn dogs, shaved ice, chocolate-covered cheesecake on a stick, corn on the cob (where you "get butter all over your face," Brown says), cotton candy, nachos and pork chop on a stick, to name just a few.
    ...
"They'll have Spam curds, Spam burgers and an open-face Spamwich," Brown says. I think I'll ask them for Spam, eggs, sausage and Spam, just to see what they say. Because I'm sure they've never heard that one before.

Of course, it's not all about pigging out. "We certainly do have healthy choices," Brown says.

"If you've got kids and some time, we've got a lot to offer that's free," says Carole Brown, Rochesterfest executive director. Brown encourages families to also check out new events, including the Summer Solstice Hike at Chester Woods, the Four Person Jigsaw Puzzle competition and the Rochester has Talent show.

Carole Brown was in a sunny mood this morning because last week was mostly sunny.

But the head of Rochesterfest also talked about a black side to the festival -- and she was equally happy about that.

The weeklong festival concluded Sunday, and "things went great," Brown said. Heat and humidity were oppressive early last week, but the weather cooled later in the week, she said.
    ...
"People were 12-deep in many places along the route," Brown said.

And Family Fun Night was "packed, just packed," she said.

As for the black, that's what she figures the books will show when final figures are known. Rochesterfest has sponsors for many events and collects money from button sales, a dance and beer sales, but it also recevied money from Mayo Clinic and the city. Ortganizers had to tighten their belts a little, but they will come out in the black, Brown said.

Next year's festival will be June 19-27. She can't say what new events will be added or if anything will be dropped. Also, "you never know when someone calls with a great idea for a new event," Brown said. Sometimes people have great ideas but don't have time to do it themselves so they call her and see if others will help, she said.

Rochesterfest's Executive Director Carole Brown said she had a brief conversation with police last week about the proposed increased security measures. However, until the fest's board of directors discusses the options, no decision will be made.

    Second chance sought

"We hope that you would give us another chance," Brown said."The percentage of incidents compared to the thousands of people down there was very small. They just get magnified, and that is all people talk about."

That doesn't mean that Brown is ignoring what did happen.

"We always have police down at the fest for that very reason," she said.

Carole Brown, executive director of Rochesterfest, said she realizes that closing down a major downtown artery like Civic Center Drive is inconvenient for drivers.

"And we don't have control over the other construction and activities downtown.Hopefully, people understand and know there's only two and a half days to go.It's a credit to the city that they let us do this," Brown said.
