Durbin, 19, received the ACE award and Allison Brown, a senior at Centerville High School, was selected as Youth of the Year and received a $500 scholarship.
...
Brown, 18, will graduate with a 4.0 GPA.
Although their stories might be different and their future plans miles apart, both had challenges they faced in high school - whether it be working while earning good grades or earning good grades while trying to participate in several different activities.
"I started working toward building a good resumé," Brown said."This award proves that all my work really has paid off."
When not in the classroom, Brown was on the volleyball and basketball court or on the golf course. She played the trumpet and has participated in district music festivals. She's a member of the Student Council, National Honor Society, Science Olympiad and band and choir.
"You're always going," she said.
She plans to study geological engineering at Montana Tech in Butte.Attending a small, rural school she said has helped her get to this point.
"I had a wonderful learning environment," she said.
During the two months Durbin spent in North Carolina, he only knew that life wasn't good and needed to get better. He thought about getting a job and possibly being homeschooled.Eventually, though, he decided to come back to Belt and finish school.
He also discovered his true passion - firefighting.
