After candidates Brian Dockery, Justin Troller and Steve Wade talked about problems in the black community and how they might solve them, Lakeland Branch NAACP president Don Brown gave the trio a little straight talk.
...
Brown made it clear he did not want to hear promises without follow-through.
And when it came to the proposed CSX hub in Winter Haven, which could bring more truck and train traffic to Lakeland, Brown offered one of the more original silver linings to a deal that will cost the Florida Department of Transportation $491 million for 61 miles of track.Downtown interests in particular are opposed to the increase in rail traffic.
Brown implied CSX could provide economic benefits that could help the poor.If the candidates really wanted to help, he said, they should be saying they would "get some money so we can buy trucks so we can unload stuff off the trains."
The forum, at the Coleman-Bush Building, was sponsored by the Gladys Leggett Neighborhood Association, the Lakeland Branch of the NAACP and Juneteenth.
Lakeland Electric, which has been a hot topic at other forums, was barely mentioned.
