   Judy Breuer qualified in Medicine from the Middlesex Hospital . Following initial training in general medicine she specialized in Microbiology and then Virology.In 1990 she undertook research into HIV-2 at the National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill.Following her appointment as Senior Lecturer, honorary consultant in Virology at Barts and the London , she developed a clinical and then a research interest in varicella-zoster virus and alphaherpesviruses, which is now her major research focus.In 2003 she was awarded a personal chair in Virology.Professor Breuer is currently head of Virology Diagnostic services at Barts and the London Hospital in London and head of the Centre for Infectious Disease within the medical school.In 2005 she was asked to head the Health Protection Agency Varicella Zoster Reference Service.
   
   Research Activity
   
   Professor Breuer has described the geographical segregation of VZV genotypes with phylogenetic evidence of four distinct clades (Journal of Virology 2002).Molecular epidemiolgical analysis suggests recent intercontinental movements of strains and in the UK , examples of all four strains are found (Journal of Clinical Microbiology 1997).The heterogenetiy of VZV strains has allowed examination of the evolution and recombination rates of VZV, work that has important implications for the introduction of vaccine (J Infectious Disease 2002).As part of this project VZV strains collected from a cohort of patients with zoster have been analysed (BMJ 2001).This cohort is providing valuable insights into the pathogenesis of VZV induced neuropathic pain.Work on the genetics of the Oka vaccine is providing insights into the determinants that are important for attenuation and immunogenicity (Journal of Infectious Disease 2005 and 2006).Professor Breuer's group have documented the burden of disease due to acute herpes zoster (Vaccine 2006) and the cost benefit of screening and immunising pregnant women ( Vaccine 2006).Most recently she has challenged the concept that latency and reactivation can be caused by one strain only (Clinical Infectious Disease in press).
   
   Professor Breuer has received funding from the Wellcome trust and Medical Research Council to investigate genetic correlates including those derived from VZV genome sequencing of vaccine attnenuation.
