The Coquille School Board approved the hire of John Breuer as the team's new head coach this week.
"I'm really excited about it," said Breuer, who has been the head wrestling coach since 1991, leading the Red Devils to 10 district titles and several state trophies for top-four finishes.
Breuer has been around the Coquille football program since 1988, helping for many years as a trainer and volunteer assistant.
He knows he faces an uphill battle trying to build a winning team in a program that hasn't had a winning season under any of the past three head coaches.
"It's going to take time to build it," Breuer said.
He was excited though, when 80 kids signed a sheet saying they were interested in going out for the team in the fall. Breuer has started opening the school's weight room from 5 to 7 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays and had a strong turnout, he said.

Sperry added that Breuer has been a big supporter of the athletic program.
