Bretzius joined Freedom in 1989 at the Daily News in Jacksonville, N.C. where he managed new publications. After eight years at the Gazette, in Gastonia, N.C., he was named publisher of the newly-purchased Havelock News and Windsock. He was named publisher of The Shopper following FENC's acquisition of the group last year. In addition to the weekly publication, The Shopper also publishes nine monthly newspapers in residential communities in Craven and Carteret counties as well as various specialty publications.
A native of Clearwater, Fla., Bretzius served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He began his newspaper career as a general assignments reporter with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He spent part of his career with advertising departments at Media General in Tampa and Winston-Salem and Knight-Ridder in State College, Penn.
He is the vice president of the Coastal Carolina United Way, treasurer of the Havelock Chamber of Commerce and past chairman of the chamber's Military Affairs Committee. His wife, Hunter, is associate publisher/executive editor of the Havelock News/Windsock. -
