"We can help with up to $400 with past-due electricity bills, deposits or help fill their propane tanks," said Lisa Bretz, with Area Agency on Aging. "We can also help out with repairs to air conditioners or heating systems. It's all related to their basic form of heating or cooling."
Bretz said if an eligible person did not have an air-conditioning unit, the program could assist them in getting a window unit or a ceiling fan.
To be eligible for the program, the applicant must be at least 60 years old, have a household income below 150 percent of the poverty level ($15,315 for a one-person family) and the utility bill for the applicant must indicate a past due or immediate threat of disconnection.
Bretz said the Bay County Council on Aging on Frankford Avenue administers low-income assistance in the area.
"Each county has a senior center that we're working with directly, and it will get submitted to us for approval," she said. -
