POLO ON HOLD: Laney College has a new women's water polo coach, Kim Bretz from Southern California, but the team has suspended play for one year. "We are going to skip a season in order to recruit and develop a program," Bretz said. "You have to have at least seven players to play a match, and you need at least a few on the bench. If you are low in numbers, you really don't want to try to have a team. It can set you back." Bretz, 30, also is the Laney swimming coach and said she thinks the swim team will be able to go on with its season in January. Experienced at starting up programs, Bretz sees a lot of long-term promise. "It takes time to build a program, but we have a great pool here once people know about us," Bretz said. "The pool is only 8 years old. It was rebuilt after the (1989) earthquake." She coached in the Long Beach area last year, was a swimming assistant for Long Beach City College and a water polo coach at Long Beach Poly High. From Ojai, Bretz went to Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo and earned her master's at Cal State Long Beach.
