    11. The General Manager of the Gold Coast Tourism Bureau, Mr R Brett, gave evidence before the Tribunal in support of the application and said that 24 hour trading is needed for the Gold Coast if both the Gold Coast and Australia are to be maintained in the future as true international tourism destinations. He says that nightclubs are a vital and integral part of tourism, in particular, tourism on the Gold Coast. He says that it is important to ensure that as a tourism destination Australia offers the widest range of experiences to international tourists to encourage them to come to this country. The nightlife available, particularly in key destinations like the Gold Coast, is a very important part of this, and for the Gold Coast it is every bit as important as its natural attractions such as national parks and beaches. He says that the rest of Australia looks to the Gold Coast for leadership on issues such as inbound tourism, marketing of destinations, transport, tourist guides, etc. He argues that similarly it is appropriate for the Gold Coast to lead the way on a trial of 24 hour trading in late night entertainment venues.

    12. Mr Brett says that during World Expo 1988, he operated the Promenade Hotel in Orchid Avenue, Surfers Paradise.
