In the Spring 2001 issue of Condo Owner, Gene Brett of Brett/Robinson, developer of the Phoenix group of condo complexes, was quoted as saying, "While no area is recession-proof, south Alabama is about as bulletproof as you can get." On the surface it is hard to disagree with Brett. Certainly, his company has had great success in the condominium market on the Alabama Gulf Coast. While Alabama is not totally bulletproof from what goes on in the rest of the nation, there are a number of factors that help our market stay above some others.
After the terrorist attacks last September, there was a significant drop off in airplane-related travel. Tourist destinations such as cruise ship ports; Orlando, Fla.; Hawaii, and other locations that are airline dependent suffered greatly. The Alabama Gulf Coast and Perdido Key, Fla., area has never been airline dependent. Therefore, the area did not suffer any significant adverse impact.
