In the 1940 Army List he is shown as DA Brett, Maj, MC, EGM. (S.U.L.).

He was awarded an OBE during the Second World War, (LG 1.1.41, p.18, Major Douglas Alexander Brett MC EGM) for his work as an Instructor at the Indian Military Academy, Dehra Dun and lately Military Secretary to His Excellency the Governor of the United Provinces.

Brett's promotion and moves were announced in the London Gazette as follows: (LG, 15.6.20, p.6589), "Lt D A Brett MC to be Captain, Indian Army (effective 25.10.19).": (LG, 16.3.39, p.4056), "Maj D A Brett transferred to Special Unemployed List, Indian Army 1.4.39, (LG, 21.8.42, p.3666), "Maj (T/Lt Col) D A Brett GC OBE MC to be Lt Col, Indian Army 24.3.42.": (LG, 25.10.46, p.5263), "Lt Col D A Brett GC OBE MC (IA.99) to retired from the Indian Army 1.10.46."
