    Bretscher opposed Socialists who he felt were too close to Communists, and as Berlin correspondent he witnessed at first hand the problems of Weimar and the emergence of National Socialism. In 1933 Bretscher was made Editor in Chief of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, a post he held until 1967.
