"Human milk is the best possible thing that you can give your baby because it is made specifically for babies," she added.

Or, as the La Leche League International, an organization founded in 1956 with the sole purpose of helping breast-feeding mothers, states on its Web site, "Breastmilk is liquid gold, and it's yours to give!"

Breast-feeding benefits mothers as well. For one, it helps women return to their pre-pregnancy weight faster.

"You can lose up to 1,000 calories a day if you're totally breast feeding," Bretscher said.

Breast-feeding delays ovulation, giving women a lesser chance of getting pregnant in the first four months after giving birth. And it also reduces the risk of ovarian cancer and premenopausal breast cancer.

While research suggests women breast feed for at least six months to a year, "The longer you breast feed, the better for the baby and for yourself," Bretscher said.

Bretscher and Turney-Mayeaux both said it is important for new breast-feeding mothers to be encouraged by their friends, family and spouses.

Bretscher said, "Support is very important after the mom goes home with the baby and breast-feeds her baby.
