The Warriors basketball program will have a new face; Shad Bretsch of Idaho will take over as head coach of the Warrior boys varsity basketball coach.

Bretsch was an All-American High School basketball player and a two-time all state guard at Coeur ‘D Alene High School in North Idaho. He also was a Street & Smith's Magazine High School All-American honorable mention and in 1989 he was an Idaho All-State honorable mention football player as well.

In college he was a reserve guard for Boise State and helped them win a Big Sky championship in 1993 and 1994, they also received two automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament in those years. After the 1994 season he received an athletic scholarship to play for Black Hills State University.

Bretsch's coached the runner up city-champions South Junior High School ninth grade team in 2000-2001 and then in the 2001-2002 season they won the city championship. Before that he coached Salmon River High School (1999-2000) varsity boys basketball team to a significant improvement from the prior season.

Bretsch found out about the Carpinteria Warrior basketball head coach job through his mother who is an avid golfer and runs a golf tour to qualify for the PGA Tour.
    ...
They didn't offer me any scholarships, so I didn't come out here," said Bretsch.

Bretsch's coaching style is run and gun and man to man defense. "A player has the best chance of making a basket by taking the ball to the hole. You get a lot of those opportunities with good solid man to man and full court defense," added Bretsch, "defense wins championships." Bretsch runs a motion offense similar to Arizona and he gives his players freedom to pass and screen away or pass and go. He believes basketball is a game of rhythm and flow and likes to leave guys on the court to find that rhythm and get in the zone.

Bretsch emulates his defensive strategies from his one time coach and according to him, "defensive guru", Rod Jensen (assistant coach at Virginia) and his says Jason Kidd is a prime example of what kids are lacking, playing both sides of the court at 100 percent and pushing the ball.
