   Mark Bressler, a 37-year-old music teacher at Rock Falls (Ill.) High School, was unanimously appointed to fill the council position left vacant by Gus Sims' resignation in November.

   Bressler grew up in the Rock Falls-Sterling, Ill., area and returned to Whiteside County five years ago. He said he heard about the open position through the city of Fulton Web site. Bressler said he applied for the position because he wanted to be involved in the community.
   
   "I really loved the town when I was growing up," Bressler said. "It's an opportunity to give the community my time."
   
   Bressler said he found out about the decision through talks with Fulton Mayor Howard VanZuiden on Friday.
   
   Bressler said that as a teacher, he has always been involved in committee work through the school system.
   
   He added he recently was inspired by Savanna, Ill., Republican Steve Haring announcing his candidacy for state representative in District 71 and called Haring "a role model in the community."
