Mark Breslin
...
Mark Breslin was born an only son of four in Toronto in 1952.He received his B.A. in English Literature from York University, and as with most new grads, graduated without really knowing what he wanted to do.In 1975, Mark became the Director of Theatre and Music at Harbourfront.
In 1976 the new development of the property resulted in a restructuring and Mark was left seeking new opportunities. He wanted to provide Harbourfront's original group with a venue to continue to perform. With no money to invest, Mark found a location in the basement of Toronto's Church Street Community Centre. At a rate of $38 per day, Mark decided to charge a $1 admission to cover the costs.
...
Mark had not anticipated the ensuing popularity that had hundreds of people lined up at his door.People from all walks of life showed up for the performance night after night, and soon the venue became inadequate.Mark moved Yuk Yuk's flagship to its present location at 1280 Bay Street in Yorkville. It's ongoing success birthed 14 more clubs throughout Canada.
In 1980, Mark became a book reviewer for the Globe and Mail and went on to write a book "Zen and Now" in 1985, published by Somerville House.
...
In 1998, Mark was chosen as Artistic Director at Humber College for their Comedy Workshop. In 1999, Mark became a founding Board Member of the Canadian Comedy Awards and a year later he released his third book, Control Freaked, published by Insomniac Press. As Executive Producer, Mark celebrated Yuk Yuk's 25th anniversary in 2001 with a on The Comedy Network. It's not a wonder Mark was chosen as "Comedy Mentor" in 2001 by the B.C. Festival of the Arts.
When Mark tells of his future visions they, of course, include ongoing support and give-back to the theatre community.
Mark's style of humour borders on controversy. This means his style does not appeal to everyone. When asked "Do you ever get used to the criticism?"he smiles. Some days its easier than others. -
