   In 1997, the board of selectors expanded the awards to include community-based individuals who volunteer and encourage others to volunteer, media relations director Margaret Breslin said.
   
   Daley was nominated by the television station WTVH in Syracuse. He and other regional recipients will be honored at a dinner and ceremony April 10 in Syracuse.
   
   A representative from WTVH could not be reached for comment.
   
   Prior to his ministry at St. Francis, Daley served at Blessed Sacrament Church and St. Agnes Church, both in Utica, and in Syracuse.
   
   Daley, who is an advocate of interfaith services and including the gay and lesbian community in Catholic masses, said growing up in the 1960s helped mold the person he is today.
   
   "Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy and the experiences growing up as a teenager during the civil rights movement and Vietnam era were great influences on me," he said.
